“Thank you, little Mouse,” says the lion. “Now I know how good it is to have friends. Friends can always help you.”

Emily’s grandmother Victoria has a little garden near Green Wood. She likes her garden a lot. There are some roses and a lot of ferns in the garden. Near it there are apple trees and plum trees. There is a little fish pond there too. Every morning Victoria feeds the fish and watches them when they are swimming and jumping in the clear water. In hot summer Victoria waters her little garden and it always looks green, tidy and beautiful. Victoria and her husband Sam come to the garden in the evening, sit on a low bench and speak about their children and grandchildren.

“You have a nice garden. Let me rest here, please,” says the soldier to the woman who lives in the house.
“I can let you rest here,” says the woman, “but I can’t feed you. There’s no food in the house.”

The snake lives in the Snake King’s castle and is the King’s favourite. She takes her new friends to the Snake King. He is happy to see his friend again and gives Johnny a magic ring as a present. “Rub [глЬ] the ring,” says the King, “and you can have all you would like.”
So, Johnny thanks the King and goes home with his new friends. There he gives his father a bigger house with a nice garden, a cow, some horses, pigs and sheep. Johnny is rich now. He thinks he can mar-ry [’maeri] the princess. She is very beautiful.
The princess doesn’t love Johnny. But he is rich and he has the magic ring. So, she says “yes” to Johnny. Johnny is happy. The beautiful princess would like to have the magic ring. The mice don’t know what to do about it. A young mouse stands up and says she has a very good plan.

Scene Three (the narrator, Johnny, the first farmer,
the second farmer, the dog)
Narrator: So Johnny goes travelling and comes to a small town. He sees two farmers. The farmers are chasing a dog.
First farmer: You, bad dog, we don’t want you here.
Second farmer: Go away and don’t come back!
Dog: Don’t chase me. I’m tired. Please, please stop.
Johnny: Give me the dog, please.
First Farmer: Take it. It’s a bad dog.
Second farmer: Yes, take it. We don’t want to feed it.
Johnny: Dog, dear dog! Let’s travel together.
Scene Four (the narrator, Johnny, the woman, the dog, the cat)
Narrator: So, Johnny and his dog travel together. Then Johnny and his dog see a woman chasing a cat.
Woman: You, bad cat, where is my milk now?
Dog: Look, Johnny, a woman is chasing a cat.
Cat: Don’t chase me. I’m tired! I don’t know about your milk.
Johnny: Give me the cat, please. Don’t chase it!
Woman: OK. Take it. It’s a very bad cat. It drinks my cow’s milk.
Johnny: Little cat, little cat, let’s travel together.

Scene Five (the narrator, Johnny, the man, the dog,
the cat, the snake)
Narrator: The woman gives him the cat and the three travel together. After some time they see a man and a snake.
Dog: Look, Johnny, look!
Cat: The man is chasing the snake.
Man: I hate snakes!
Snake: Don’t chase me. I’m tired.
Johnny: Give me the snake, please.
Man: OK, you can have it.
Johnny: Come and travel together with us, little green snake.
Snake: You know, Johnny, I live in the Snake King’s castle. My King loves me. Let’s go to my King together.
Johnny: It’s a good idea. I’d like to meet the King.
Narrator: So Johnny and the three happy animals travel together.
Scene Six (the narrator, johnny, the dog, the cat, the snake, the Snake King)
Narrator: So, the snake takes her new friends to the Snake King. He is happy to see his friend, the little green snake again.
Snake: Good afternoon. King! These are my new friends.
Johnny, dog, cat: Good afternoon, sir!
Snake King: Oh, my dear snake. I’m happy to see you. I’m glad to meet your new friends. Johnny, take this magic ring as a present.
Johnny: Thank you. King, thank you very much.
Snake King: Rub the ring and you can have all you would like.

Scene Seven (the narrator, Johnny, the father,
the dog, the cat)
Narrator: So, Johnny thanks the King and goes home with his dog and his cat.
Johnny: Father, I am back. These are my new friends.
Dog, cat: Good afternoon! We are glad to meet you.
Johnny: I am rich now. Father. Now you can have
a new house with a big garden.
Father: Thank you, son. I’d like a new house and
a nice garden too.
Johnny: And you can have a lot of farm animals — a cow, some horses, pigs and sheep.
Father: Thank you, son. You are rich now. I think
you can marry the princess.
Johnny: Yes, I think I can. The princess is very beautiful.
Scene Eight (the narrator, Johnny, the princess)
Narrator: So Johnny goes to the princess.
Johnny: Hello, princess. My name is Johnny. I’m rich. I have a magic ring. I want to be happy and marry you.

Princess’. Are you really rich? Do you really have a magic ring? I think I can marry you.
Narrator: But the princess doesn’t love Johnny. She marries him because he is rich and because he has the magic ring. So, she says “yes” to Johnny.
Johnny: I’m the happiest man!
Princess: But now I would like to have the magic ring. Give it to me!
Johnny {giving her the ring): Take it, my dear.
Narrator: Johnny gives her the magic ring. The princess takes it and runs to her father. What can Johnny do?
Johnny: I understand now that the princess doesn’t love me. I’m so unhappy!
Scene Nine (the narrator, Johnny, the dog, the cat)
Narrator: Johnny is very sad. But he has an idea.
Johnny: My dear dog, my dear cat! Go to the princess’s castle and bring me my magic ring.
Dog, cat {together): Yes, master.
Narrator: The dog and the cat run to the princess’s castle and bring Johnny the ring.
Dog: Here is your ring, master.
Narrator: Johnny rubs his magic ring.
Johnny: I wouldn’t like to be rich. I wouldn’t like to marry the princess. I would like to live with my family. I would like to meet a girl who can love me and I would like to be happy with her!

Scene One (the narrator, the Wind, the Sun)
Narrator: One bright day in spring the Wind meets the Sun.
Wind: Hello, my friend! How are you?
Sun: I’m fine, dear Wind, thank you. I love spring. Spring is my time. In spring I’m strong and happy.
Wind: Strong? Do you know that I’m stronger than you. Sun?
Sun: No, you are not, I am stronger than you, a lot stronger.
Narrator: They don’t know who is right but they want to know it. Then the Sun has an idea.

Sun: I have an idea. Wind.
Wind: Well, what’s your idea?
Sun: Can you see that man down there? He has a warm coat on. Can you make him take off his coat?
Wind: Yes, I can do that. It’s very easy. Now you can see that I am stronger than you. Sun.
{The Wind begins blowing.)
Narrator: So the Wind begins to blow. It blows, and blows, and blows. But what’s the result?
Man: Oh! How cold that wind is! And how strong! I’m happy I have this warm coat on.

Narrator: The man doesn’t take off his coat. More than that, he puts on his scarf and a hat. Now the Wind begins to blow stronger. The man can’t stand on his feet, but he doesn’t take off his coat.
Man (shaking): I am so cold!
Wind: No, Sun, I can’t make the man take off his coat. Now you try.
Narrator: The Sun smiles and begins to shine in the sky.
Sun (performing magic): It’s getting warmer and warmer. Now it is hot.
Narrator: The man is very hot in his warm coat. He opens up his coat, takes off his scarf and his hat. As the Sun gets brighter and hotter he takes off his coat.
Man (taking off his things): It’s a warm sunny day, I love this weather.
Wind: OK, Sun, you win.
Sun: Kindness works better than force.
Narrator: Yes, kindness works better than force. Think about it.
The Princess and the Pea
Cast: the king, the queen, the prince, ^ the girl (Fran).
Scene One (the king, the queen and the prince)
King: My dear son, you’re a big boy now. It’s time for you to have a wife.
Queen: Listen to your father. You’re going to be king some day and every king has a queen.
Prince: I know. I’d like to have a wife but I want a true princess. I’m trying to meet a true princess but can’t do it. There are no true princesses any more.
Queen: My poor boy!
Scene Two (the king, the queen, the prince and the girl)
Girl: Please open the door. Can I, please, come in? Help me! I’m so cold and the night is so dark and rainy.
King: I’ll go and open the door. The poor girl is asking for help.
Prince: No, dad. I’ll do it. (To the girl.) Please come in. Who are you?
King: What’s your name?
Girl: I’m Fran. My father is King Helmut.
Queen: Then you are a princess?
Girl: A true princess.
Queen (to the king): We’ll see about it. (To the girl.) I’ll take you upstairs to the visitor’s room. You can change there and then come downstairs to have dinner with us.
Girl: Thank you.
Prince: That’s a very good idea, mum.

Queen: It’s wonderful! The girl is a true princess. Yesterday night I placed a little pea under 20 mattresses on the girl’s bed. Only a true princess can be so delicate.
Prince: I’m the happiest man in the world! {To Fran.) Will you marry me, Fran?
Fran: Yes, I’ll be happy to be your wife, dear Prince. King: And we’ll all live happily ever after.

         In

The Cat and the Mice

A cat lives in a small house. In the
kitchen of the cat’s house live little mice. The cat is very big and every day
she eats one or two mice. But on her birthday the cat does not eat mice. Every
year all the mice in her house come to the cat’s birthday party. Of course, the
cat is very glad to see the mice. They give her birthday presents: cakes,
bottles of milk and interesting toys. The toys are made of paper and cotton.
The cat likes the cakes and milk. She likes the toys too.

         Last
year  the mice came to the cat’s birthday party and said “Here is blue ribbon
with a small bell for you”. The cat was glad because the ribbon was
nice, it was made of silk. The cat took the ribbon, put it on and said “Thank
you. I like the ribbon with the bell very much. I am going to wear it all the
time”. The mice were happy for they knew when the cat came.

the mice heard the bell, they ran away from the kitchen.

Sister at the Birthday Party

There was a little
boy who lived in our street. His name was Tom. My little sister liked to play
with him. So they often played in our yard and in our garden.

But Tom was a
naughty little boy and my sister was a naughty little girl. They walked all
over the flowers and picked green apples and broke their toys and broke my
toys. One day they washed my doll in dirty water and the next day they put
Tom’s Teddy Bear in the middle of the flower-bed.

One day Tom came
to our house with a letter for my sister. He said to Nancy: “This is a
letter for you from my mother. Please come to my birthday party. We shall have
tea and a big birthday cake”.

“I like birthday
cakes”, said my little sister. She put on her best dress and her white socks
and white shoes.

“Don’t forget to
say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you,’ ” said my mother.

When my little
sister came to the birthday party, she said to Tom’s mother: “How do you do? I
want some birthday cake.”

Tom’s mother
laughed and said: “Soon all the children will come, and then you can have the
birthday cake.”

Then the other
children came and they all played in the garden. They played hide-and-seek.
They sang songs and danced. But my little sister did not want to play. She did
not want to dance and she did not want to play.

“I can show you
the birthday cake,” she said.

So they went to
the dining room, there on the table they saw a beautiful birthday cake with
chocolate roses on it.

“Oh, I like
chocolate roses very much”, said my naughty little sister.

“I can give you a
little rose,” said Tom. He gave my sister one little rose, and she ate it up.
Then he took one rose and ate it up. My sister ate three roses, and Tom ate
three roses. They took the roses with their hands, and there was chocolate on
their hands and on their faces. Then they went into the garden to play with
other children.

When Tom’s mother
saw them, she did not ask any questions. She went to the dining-room and looked
at the birthday cake. She was very angry.

Tom’s mother told
Tom to go to bed. And she told my sister to go home.

My sister is not a
little girl now, but she does not like chocolate roses even today.

In
a small town far away, a man stole some money from a house.  The police began
to look for the thief, and they found him in two days.  They brought him to the
police station and found some of the money in his coat.

There
was a new policeman at the police station, and they wanted to gibe him some
work.  «Take this thief to the city», said one of them.  «You
must go there by train, and it goes very soon.  Don’t be late».

The
policeman and the thief set out along the road to the station.  On their way
they came to a shop.  In this shop bread was sold.

«We
have no food and we must eat something in the train,» said the thief. 
«It’s a long way to the city and it will take a long time.  I’ll go into
this shop and buy some bread.   Then you and I can eat it in the train.  Wait
here for me.»  The policeman was glad.  «I’ll have some food in the
train,» he thought.  «Be quick,» he said to the thief.  «We
haven’t much time.»

The
thief went into the shop, and the policeman waited in the street for a long
time.  But then he began to think about the train, and at last he went into the
shop.

«Where’s
that man who came in here to buy some bread?» asked the policeman.

«Oh,
he went out of the back door», said the shopkeeper.

The
policeman ran out of the back door, but he could not se the thief.  He ran down
the road, but he could not find him.  So he had to go back to the police
station and tell the others about it.  They were very angry with him and he was
very unhappy.

All
the police of the town began to look for the thief again, and they soon caught
him.  They brought him back to the police station and called the same
policeman.

«Now,»
said one of them angrily, «take him to the city, and don’t lose him
again!»

The
policeman and the thief set out again along the same road to the station, and
they came to the same shop.

«Wait
here,» said the thief.  «I want to go into that shop and buy some
bread for our journey.»

«Oh,
no,» said the policeman.  «You did that before, and you ran away. 
This time, I’ll go into the shop and buy the bread, and you must wait here for
me.»

интересные фразы и слова из истории можно выписывать в отдельную тетрадь для того, чтобы в дальнейшем иметь возможность возвращаться к ним.

A Good Lesson (Хороший урок)

Once a rich Englishwoman called Mrs Johnson decided to have a birthday party. She invited a lot of guests and a singer. The singer was poor, but he had a very good voice.
The singer got to Mrs Johnson’s house at exactly six o’clock as he had been asked to do, but when he went in, he saw through a door that the dining-room was already full of guests, who were sitting round a big table in the middle of the room. The guests were eating, joking, laughing, and talking loudly. Mrs Johnson came out to him, and he thought she was going to ask him to join them, when she said, «We’re glad, sir, that you have come. You will be singing after dinner, I’ll call you as soon as we’re ready to listen to you. Now will you go into the kitchen and have dinner, too, please?»

The singer was very angry, but said nothing. At first he wanted to leave Mrs Johnson’s house at once, but then he changed his mind and decided to stay and teach her and her rich guests a good lesson. When the singer went into the kitchen, the servants were having dinner, too. He joined them. After dinner, the singer thanked everybody and said, «Well, now I’m going to sing to you, my good friends.» And he sang them some beautiful songs.
Soon Mrs Johnson called the singer.
«Well, sir, we’re ready.»
«Ready?» asked the singer. «What are you ready for?»
«To listen to you,» said Mrs Johnson in an angry voice.
«Listen to me? But I have already sung, and I’m afraid I shan’t be able to sing any more tonight.»
«Where did you sing?»
«In the kitchen. I always sing for those I have dinner with.»

The Shoebox (Коробка от обуви)

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoebox in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.

In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoebox and took it to his wife’s bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two knitted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents.

‘When we were to be married,’ she said, ‘ my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and knit a doll.’

The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.

‘Honey,’ he said, ‘that explains the dolls, but what about all of this money?

Where did it come from?’

‘Oh,’ she said, ‘that’s the money I made from selling the dolls.’

Jenny and Robert Slater were on holiday in America. They were young and it was their first time away from home in England. They had a car and visited many famous and interesting places.

‘I want to see New York,’ Jenny said one morning. ‘Let’s go there.’

‘Mmm, I don’t know, love. Everybody says New York’s a dangerous place and there are a lot of very strange people there,’ her husband answered.

‘We’ll be careful,’ said Jenny. ‘Then we won’t have any problems.’

So they arrived in New York early in the evening and found a hotel. Later they went out and drove round the streets. They didn’t have any problems. ‘See,’ Jenny said. ‘Nothing to be afraid of.’

They had dinner in a good restaurant and then went to a cinema. They arrived back at their hotel at midnight. Under the hotel was a garage so they drove into it and left the car. It was quite dark there and they couldn’t see very well.

‘Where’s the lift?’ Jenny asked.

‘Over there, I think, near the door,’ Robert answered. ‘Come on, let’s go. I don’t like this dark place.’

Suddenly they saw a very tall young man with a big black dog. They were nervous and walked past him as fast as they could to the lift. The door of the lift opened and Jenny and Robert got in. Before the doors closed the man and the dog jumped in – three people and one big black dog in the lift.

‘On the floor, Girl!’ the tall man said. Jenny and Robert were afraid now, so they quickly got down on the floor. When the lift stopped at the next floor, they stood up, gave the man all their money and got out fast.

‘That man was a robber! Perhaps he had a gun… It’s dangerous here!’ Robert said. ‘We’re going to leave New York now!’

‘Yes, you’re right.’ Jenny answered. ‘There are some dangerous people in New York.’

First thing next morning they took their room key to the desk and gave it to the woman.

‘There’s nothing to pay, Mr Slater,’ she said. ‘A tall young man with a nice dog came to the desk late last night and paid for your room. Oh, wait a minute – he left this for you, too.’ She gave Robert an envelope.

He opened it carefully and took out a letter. They read it together: ‘Here’s your money and I’m very sorry you were afraid in the lift last night. “Girl” is the name of my dog.’

“Oh, yes, I understand,” said the man. He quickly opened his bag and stream of diamonds was poured into it. The bag began to grow heavy. “Is that enough?” asked Fortune. “Not yet.” The man’s hand’s began to tremble.

“You are the richest man in the world now.” Said Fortune.

“Just a few more, and a few more,” said the man. Another diamond was added and the bag slipped. All the diamonds fell on the ground and became dust.

Fortune disappeared, leaving the man in the street.

Everyone has heard of Sherlock Holmes. Everyone has read stories about Sherlock Holmes at one time or another. Sherlock Holmes was a famous detective. Actually, he was the most famous detective of all times.The author of the Sherlock Holmes stories was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Once Sir Arthur arrived in Paris. He took a cab and asked the cabman to take him to the Ritz, the hotel where he was going to spend the night.The cabman brought him to the hotel. When he received the fare he said:
“Thank you very much, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.”
“How do you know who I am?” asked Sir Arthur. He was very much surprised.“Well, sir, I read in the newspaper yesterday that you were coming to Paris from the South of France. I also noticed that your hair was cut by a barber in the South of France. Your clothes and especialy your hat told me that you were English. I put all the information together and quessed that you were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.”

“That is wonderful,” said Sir Arthur.
“You could recognize me though you knew very few facts.”

“Besides,” added the cabman. Your name is on both of your travelling bags. That also helped.”

So, the cabman played a good joke on Conan Doyle.

Long ago there lived an old woman in England. She had a son who was a sailor. He went to different countries and always brought presents for his old mother.Once he went to China and brought some tea from that country.
At that time tea was very expensive and only rich people could buy and drink it. So the old woman was very happy to have such a nice present. But she didn’t know what to do with it as she had never bought tea before. She thought it was a vegetable. She told her friends about her son’s present and invited them to taste it with her. At last the day of the tea-party came. The woman called her guests to the dining-room and put a big dish of tea leaves on the table. The guests began to eat the leaves with salt just as they ate vegetables. Nobody liked it but didn’t tell the woman about it and continued to eat the leaves.Some tome later the sailor came into the room. When he saw that all the guests were eating leaves, he smiled.“What are you doing? Why are eating these leaves? Where is the tea?”
“Here it is, my son,” the old woman said.
“And where is the water in which you have boiled the leaves?” asked the man laughing.
“I threw it away, of course,” answered the woman.

It happened about a year ago. Our family bought a new car, and parents decided to celebrate it all together in the cafe. We enjoyed great food, had a conversation and a lot of fun. Dad was happy and he told us many jokes, everybody laughed more and more. We played the fools and couldn’t stop.When it was time to go, Dad paid and left cafe to warm up the car, and Mom, her friend, my brother and I lingered in the cafe. When we went out, we realised that it was already dark outside — so we couldn’t see well. And the second thing we reailsed was the fact, that nobody can remember exactly, what our new car looks like! But Mom confidently went toward the black car, that was standing nearly. «Oh, Dad is waiting inside, it’s ours. Come on».
Just imagine: the company of four very noisy people, singing, talking loudly, laughing out, get into car. Mum turn to driver and exclaimed cheerfully: «Sasha, let’s go!»…The driver looked at us with eyes full of fear and cried out desperatly: «I am not Sasha, I am Egor!!! Who are you?!»Then we, absolutly confused and quiet, get in the right car, we told Dad about it. He couldn’t drive for 5 minutes becouse of laughing.

A Magic Ring (Волшебное кольцо)

Once upon a time there lived a young farmer. He worked very hard but was very poor. One day when he was far from home in the forest, an old woman looking like a peasant came up to him and said, «I know you work very hard, and all for nothing. I will give you a magic ring! It will make you rich, and your work won’t be in vain. When you turn the ring on your finger and say what you wish to have, you’ll have it at once! But there is only one wish in the ring, so think carefully before you wish.»

The astonished farmer took the ring given to him by the peasant woman, and went home. In evening he came to a big city. There he went to a merchant and showed him the magic ring. When the merchant heard the astonishing story, he thought of a plan. He invited the farmer to stay in his house for the night. At night he came up to the sleeping peasant, carefully took the ring off the man’s finger, and put on another ring, which looked exactly like the one he had taken off.

In the morning when the farmer had gone away, the merchant ran into his shop, shut the door, and said while turning the ring on his finger, «I wish to have a hundred thousand pieces of gold.» And down they came, on his head, shoulders, and arms, like a rain of gold! The frightened merchant tried to get out of the shop, but in vain. In a few minutes he was dead.

When the farmer returned home, he showed the ring to his wife. «Take a look at this ring,» he said. «It’s a magic ring! It will make us happy.”

The astonished woman could hardly say a word «Let’s try. Maybe the ring will bring us more land,» she said at last.

“We must be careful about our wish. Don’t forget there’s only one thing that we may ask for,» he explained. «Let’s better work hard for another year, and we’ll have more land.”

So they worked as hard as they could and got enough money to buy the land they wished to have.

Then the farmer’s wife thought of asking for a cow and a horse. They discussed the matter more than once.
“My good wife”, — said the farmer, — “we shall get a horse and a cow without the ring.”
They went on working hard for a whole year and again bought the things they wished to have.

«What happy people we are!» said the farmer.

“I don’t understand you,» answered his wife angrily. «There’s nothing in the world that we can’t have, and still we spend days and nights working as hard as before, because you don’t want to use your magic ring!”

Thirty, then forty years had gone by. The farmer and his wife had grown old. Their hair became as white as snow. They were happy and had everything they wanted. Their ring was still there. Although it was not a magic ring, it had made them happy. For you see, my dear friends, a poor thing in good hands is better than a fine thing in bad hands.

He wished for forty of his scales to be on his pillow by morning, but there weren’t any. Even three weeks later there weren’t any.

Крокодильчик загадал перед сном, чтобы на подушку выпало 40 чешуинок. Но этого не случилось. Не выпали они и через три недели.

Then one day a magic crocodile granted him a wish. He wished for forty of his scales to be on his pillow.

И вот в один прекрасный день волшебник-крокодил подарил малышу одно желание. Он снова загадал, чтобы 40 чешуечек оказались у него на подушке.

He woke up. There were forty beautiful shiny scales on his pillow! He gave all twenty crocodiles, two scales each. From then on everybody was kind to the little baby crocodile.

Крокодильчик проснулся, и о чудо! На подушке лежало 40 блестящих чешуек. Он раздал их 20 крокодилам: каждому по 2 чешуйки. С тех пор все подружились с добрым малышом-крокодильчиком.

The boy who cried “Wolf!” (Мальчик, который кричал «Волки!»)

Once upon a time there lived a little boy. He lived in the village, and looked after sheep. But he was not a good boy because he often told lies.

Однажды жил на свете маленький мальчик. Он жил в деревне и следил за овечками. Но он не был очень хорошим мальчиком, потому что он часто врал.

He had a joke which he often played on the people. The boy ran down and cried out very loudly: Wolf! Wolf! Help me anyone! There is a wolf!”

У него была одна шутка, которую он часто играл с людьми. Мальчик бежал вниз и очень громко выкрикивал: Волк! Волк! Помогите мне кто-нибудь! Здесь волк!

The neighbors ran very fast to him because they wanted to save his life. But when they came the boy laughed at them. He was playing the same trick again and again.

Соседи быстро бежали к нему, потому что они хотели спасти жизнь мальчика. Но когда они приходили, сорванец смеялся над ними. Он проделывал этот трюк снова и снова.

Once upon a time there was a wonderful warm day. The boy was sleeping at the tree. Suddenly he heard a strange sound. The boy woke up and saw a big dark animal. It was a wolf.

Однажды выдался замечательный теплый денек. Мальчишка спал под деревом. Вдруг он услышал странный звук. Мальчик проснулся и увидел крупного серого зверя. Это был волк.

Now the boy really alarmed.

Aaaaa! – he cried. – Pray, anybody, do come and help me! Please! The wolf is running after me!

Теперь мальчик действительно обеспокоился.

«Аааа!»– кричит он. –«Умоляю, кто-нибудь придите и помогите мне! Пожалуйста! Волк гонится за мной!»

But nobody came to save the boy this time. Because there is no believing a liar, even when he speaks the truth. When the boy didn’t return home at night the people went to look for him. But they never found the boy.

Но на этот раз никто не пришел спасать мальчика. Потому что никто не поверит лгуну, даже если он вдруг решит сказать правду. Когда мальчик не вернулся ночью домой, люди отправились его искать. Но им так никогда и не удалось отыскать мальчишку.
