New Year’s in Russia
New Year’s Day is one of the biggest and most popular holidays in Russia. Like in most other countries, New Year’s Day falls on the 1st of January here, but the celebration begins on New Year’s Eve, on the 31st of December. Most people start celebrating it in the evening and finish early in the morning. The most important part is the moment when the New Year begins – at midnight.
In Russia, New Year’s is a bigger holiday than Christmas, and it is very similar to Christmas in Western cultures. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on the 7th of January, but, unlike Christmas in Western countries, it is a strictly religious holiday. In other words, usually, people do not have parties and family dinners on Christmas. We also do not have traditions of giving presents, putting up a Christmas tree and decorating in the Christmas period. We do all that for New Year’s.
In December, people shop for presents and Christmas trees (we call them “New Year trees”). It is customary to give presents on New Year’s Eve. Most families make a lot of dishes and invite guests over. The guests might bring gifts, especially if there are little children there, but it is not necessary. Usually, people in Russia give presents to their family and friends. As for gifts for children, these are brought by Grandfather Frost – the Russian version of Santa Claus.
On the 1st of January, at night, Grandfather Frost magically visits every family and leaves presents for children. There are no traditions with stockings here; he leaves the gifts under the New Year tree. Kids wake up in the morning and rush to see what is under the tree. This is the most exciting morning for them!
But let’s get back to New Year’s Eve. Usually, people start celebrating at about 9 p.m. or even later, it depends on the family’s own traditions. Millions of people say, “Happy New Year!”, cheer, drink champagne and pull crackers.

New Year is a great holiday. Everybody likes it very much. Especially this holiday is loved by children. New Year is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home with members of the family and friends. People decorate their houses, send greeting cards and buy gifts for kids, relatives and friends. A New Year’s tree is a symbol of celebration. It is usually covered with coloured balls and strings of coloured lights.
New Year’s Eve is a time for fun. People spend the holiday at home or in restaurants. The most popular New Year’s Eve drink is champagne. Champagne is the drink that symbolizes celebration and it is often served for the midnight toast. At 12 o’clock everybody raises a glass of champagne and says “Happy New Year!” New Year’s Eve festivals often continue until two or three o’clock in the morning.
New Year’s Day is a special day. Many people make New Year resolutions, give up bad habits or plan for future. From the ancient times to the present New Year’s customs have been connected with saying good-bye to the past and looking forward to a better future.
New Year In Different Countries
New Year is a fantastic holiday. Every child and even adult waits for it every time. It’s time of magic and new plans, presents and family celebration. We give presents to each other, cook dinner, decorate our home and Christmas tree and invite our relatives to dine with us. This is the way how we celebrate New Year. People celebrate New Year few times per year in India. During this holiday people jump through the fire and throw colorful water to each other. They do all these things to have fun and to celebrate.
Italians also have interesting traditions. Before New Year they throw away all things they don’t use. And in Venice at midnight you can see many couples kissing each other. This tradition is very unique and in some countries people follow it because it’s so romantic.
New Year is a great holiday. Not only different countries but also families have their own traditions. I think it’s nice to have something personal and to follow it every year to have nice memories and connection with your relatives.

Essay on New Year
Holidays make our lives lively and interesting. We can have some fun, relax and don’t feel any pressure. Within the year there are a lot of holidays such as Mother’s Day, Victory Day, Christmas, May Day. Since childhood, my favorite holiday is New Year. We celebrate it on the 1st of January.
Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.
I think each family has its own tradition during this day and I want to share some of mine. In my household we usually start getting ready for New Year in advance: we find the best presents, buy lots of food and adorn our flat with different garlands and the New Year tree. Sometimes we create our own costumes for New Year party because it’s a funny tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year in unusual clothes.
My father is excellent at cooking so he always makes meat dumplings, cooks chicken with oranges and his special vegetable pie. My brother and I cook some salads and my mother bakes fruit tarts. They are fantastic and taste heavenly. After famous supper, we meet with our family friends and head to the downtown to view fireworks, concerts and colorful carnivals. If the weather is nasty we stay at home, watch entertaining shows on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.
I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, every person looks forward to celebrating it with their family.

At 12 o’clock at night, when the Kremlin chimes on Red Square in Moscow begin to beat the last minute of the outgoing year, everyone makes wishes for the next year and raises their glasses of champagne. At this last minute of the year ended, the President of Russia congratulates all Russians on the New Coming Year. As soon as the chimes beat off the last blows, volleys of holiday fireworks and salute begin to explode from everywhere. The night sky is lit up with bright, colorful flashes. People congratulate each other on the New Year in coming, wish for the fulfillment of desire and all the best in the New Year.
Children are especially waiting for this holiday, as they believe that Santa Claus will come to them on a magical New Year’s Eve and put gifts under the Christmas tree, which they asked him in their letters to him. Celebration of the New Year brings people together and gives them joyful efforts and cheerful mood. Also, this New Year’s holiday gives people hope for a happy and peaceful life.

Every country has its national holidays, but there are also holidays that are common for many countries. New Year’s Day is the first holiday of each New Year. In Russia it is the most popular holiday, but in the West people pay more attention to Christmas.
New Year is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. Everyone hopes that next new year will be better than the last one. As usual people make New Year Resolutions, they promise to start doing morning exercises, to eat healthier food. Unfortunately people don’t always keep them.
The celebration of this holiday begins on New Year’s Eve, that is, on the 31st of December. At home people stay up until midnight and much later. They light coloured lamps on New Year Tree and have late dinner with champagne. Sometimes they just watch TV or go out for late walk. Everybody gets presents.
In Scotland New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay. Also the Scottish have the custom of First-Footing.
Most differences in celebrating New Year are connected with a meal or special food. For example, in Switzerland special bread, rich in butter, eggs and raisin is baked and a roasted goose is cooked. In Spain there is a custom to eat 12 grapes at midnight. In Greece some people play cards believing that they will be lucky the whole year if they win. In Russia the traditional dish for the holiday is “Russian salad”(оливье).
What is New Year»s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year»s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year»s day is different from the American New Year because we don»t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year»s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians» New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. New Year is my favourite holiday.We celebrate it on the 31st of December.
This year I celebrated New Year with my family. On New Year Eve we bought a New Year tree and decorated it with coloured balls and bright lights. We bought presents for our friends and relatives. My mother and I cooked a holiday supper. We made tasty salads, chicken, potatoes and mushrooms. We made a holiday cake, too. We bought a lot of fruit and sweets. Most people prefer to prepare for the holiday party in advance. We cook , and jellied just the day before the New Year. As for the main dish, we prefer to bake something in the oven: chicken, beef, pork or even a rabbit. The table is served in a festive way. There are a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, mushrooms and pickled cucumbers. And of course beverages: champagne, juices, mineral water and strong drinks for those who like them.

Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), Tibetans and Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (Tết), and the Japanese before 1873 (Oshogatsu).
In countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States, although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Australia Post, Canada Post, and the US Postal Service issue New Year’s themed stamps.
Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper is a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition is a great way to reconcile, forgetting all grudges, and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.

Normally, we get together for the holiday table about 10 pm to say goodbye to the Old Year. It is believed that the New Year is a family holiday, so we always try to join with relatives and friends. About midnight we turn on the TV and listen to the President’s speech. We listen to him holding a glass of champagne in our hands. He usually talks for about 10 minutes, congratulates everyone on the New Year and wishes all the best. There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year’s Day, Christmas, Women’s Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.
I like New Year’s Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year.
Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.
The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work.
We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.
Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.
My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.
All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o’clock in the evening.
At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, «Best wishes for the New Year!»
I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

I celebrate the New Year with my family. We lay the cloth and put many tasty things on it. Such as different salads, cakes, fruits, and other courses. One of us wears the coast of Father Frost, and somebody else wears a suit of Snow Maiden. We switch off the light and shut Father Frost three times just for fun. We sing songs, play games, dance and have a lot of fun. If it snows we make a snowman and put a carrot on his nose or play snowballs.
Celebrations include delightful messages, cheerful wishes, parties, dances, crackers, lightings, new dresses, and outings. The people start to prepare for the holiday at least one month in an advance. The preparation begins by buying presents, decorating houses, and making new costumes. Obviously, the holiday would not be complete without a symbol of New Year which transcended from generation to generation, the New Year Tree, the unique tree having million small needles and staying green throughout the year.
The New Year is my favorite holiday because this day I spend with my family. Also, I like its magic and festive atmosphere, and long holidays.

Новый Год празднуется во всем мире с большим удовольствием и энтузиазмом. Это особый день для многих людей. Они покупают новую одежду, подарки и разные вещи в магазинах. Магазины полны посетителями в эти дни.
Хоть люди в каждой стране имеют свой собственный день Нового года, 1 января считается государственным праздником во всем мире. Люди наряжаются, передают свои пожелания, веселятся, танцуют и поют на Новый год. Новогодние праздники отмечают не только люди старшего поколения. Это день, в который люди всех возрастов собираются и делятся своим счастьем друг с другом. В этот день люди прощают обиды и решают разногласия.
Я праздную Новый год со своей семьей. Мы расстилаем скатерть и ставим на стол много вкусных вещей. Таких как различные салаты, торты, фрукты и другие блюда. Кто-нибудь из нас надевает костюм Деда Мороза, а еще кто-то – костюм Снегурочки. Мы выключаем свет и кричим три раза «Дед Мороз!» просто ради веселья. Мы поем песни, играем в игры, танцуем и много веселимся. Если идет снег, мы делаем снеговика с носом из морковки или играем в снежки.
Празднование включает в себя восхитительные письма, веселые пожелания, вечеринки, танцы, хлопушки, гирлянды, новые вещи и экскурсии. Люди начинают готовиться к празднику как минимум за месяц. Подготовка начинается с покупки подарков, украшения дома и создания новых костюмов. Очевидно, что этот праздник не будет полноценным без символа Нового года, который переходит из поколения в поколение – новогодней елки. Это уникальное дерево, имеющее миллион мелких иголочек и остающееся зеленым на протяжении всего года. Новый год – мой любимый праздник, потому что этот день я провожу со своей семьей. Еще мне нравится его волшебная, праздничная атмосфера и длинные каникулы.
